ON EXHIBITION August 22nd - October 22nd Black ash, Sweetgrass, Fine Silver, Rit. Basket opens to a vial of Water from Lake Michigan .Plaited with silver overlay.
I harvest and process black ash trees from the forests of Michigan to weave my baskets. This basket is woven in the shape of an egg, showing the fragility of it's contents and reminiscent of the preciousness and beauty of a Faberge Egg.It contains a vial of water from Lake Michigan. Pipeline #5 is a major oil pipeline that runs under the straits of Mackinac, connecting Lake Michigan to Lake Huron. It is made up of 2 pipes that carry nearly 23 million gallons of oil and natural gas liquids daily. It has failed 29 times since 1968, and would be catastrophic to the Great Lakes if compromised. The Great Lakes hold 21% of the WORLD'S fresh water. WE all need water to survive and water is a basic human right that is becoming a commodity being marketed and used unsustainably. We must act now for the good of all human kind to preserve and protect all waterways as the life giving and life sustaining forces they are.
The blue and natural ash color represents our water, appearing a brilliant blue when we view it and clear, like the water in the vial. The black criss cross weaving throughout the basket represent the connection of our water ways, running like veins through our bodies, all connected and moving, providing life. The color black represents the Oil and destruction. If ANY of these waterways are polluted and becomes undrinkable, that pollution does not just stop there. It seeps into the connecting water ways and continues to poison all it connects to. My water is Your water. When someone is fighting for clean water, they are fighting for you. When someone is fighting for clean water, they are literally fighting for Our Lives.
This basket is on Exhibition August 22nd - October 4th, 2020.
