Black ash, Sweetgrass, White Cedar bark, Copper, Black Sinew, Rit, Treaty Map from Michigan, Tobacco in Cloth tied with basswood cordage. Vials filled with Water, Copper Wild Rice,Sweetgrass/Black ash
This hat is made of many of the fibers of the forest I work with, and incorporates copper, the first metal we used for tools and our first food wild rice. The map at the top shows the treaties which allow the Natives of Michigan to harvest, fish and hunt forever more. These Treaties ensure us the harvest of our black ash trees (main hat body),White cedar bark (rim of brim),Sweetgrass (as hat band and rim of brim), and Basswood cordage (tying tobacco in cloth).
The story written on the hat tells of Pipeline #5, which consists of 2 pipelines that run under the straits of Mackinac, connecting Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. The Great Lakes make up 21% of our world's fresh water. A human will die within 7 days without water. It is imperative we protect our Great Lakes and all of our Nation's water for all of humankind and future generations. 8 1/2" H x 9 1/2" W x 11" L
