Black Ash, Sweetgrass, Copper, Rit. Basket Contains a vial with an Emerald Ash Borer in it, on black velvet. 9" height x 4 1/2" Diameter
This basket contains a vial with an Emerald Ash borer in it. EAB was first discovered in Michigan in 2002. It is predicted to have been in Michigan since approximately 1992. It has decimated nearly the entire ash resource of Michigan. Being the first state infected by EAB, Michigan Native Black ash basketmakers have been learning, adapting, and sharing what they have learned with other Nations to help them prepare. The Emerlad ash borer is a brilliant green with a copper belly. I incorporated the copper to resemble the colors of the Emerald Ash Borer and to show how we are transitioning to other materials to weave with. I incorporate photos, cedar, metals, weave with vinyl blinds and am beginning to transition to other teachings such as quilling, and weaving with cedar, should black ash be unavailable in my lifetime. I have woven an area partially in copper only, not showing any black ash. This is to show the loss of our black ash trees and materials, and the transition to other materials. We will be able to retain our weaving teachings, but will miss out on the most important part of making a black ash basket,...the harvest, and processing of the materials, which is 75% of the work.
